I have a confession to make...
When I was in the thick of my own intuitive development, I doubted everything I picked up.
I practiced giving readings for years in private classes and circles, and each time I received information from someone at the psychic or intuitive level, I was almost completely skeptical.
-Even when they confirmed everything I said about their home, job or relationship.
-Even when they brought in the exact locket their departed mother had told me they had.
-Even when the spirit portraits I drew looked identical to a photo someone would show me (after I drew the picture).
I had proof all over the place. My teacher once called me “a great reader”. And still, I thought we all might be under some collective delusion.
Then, when I finally started to believe in myself and my spiritual gifts, I became afraid.
-Afraid that important people in my life wouldn’t accept or believe me.
-Afraid that now I really WAS a weirdo.
-Afraid I was doing something "evil" or "supernatural".
In truth, I was afraid of my own spiritual power.
Despite the madness of all these thoughts and fears, the day that I would emerge from my spiritual closet (or cocoon, if you will) continued to approach.
Trying to delay the inevitability of living life as a full-fledged intuitive medium after a lifetime of confusion, I asked many other teachers and master readers, “how do I proceed? When will I be good enough at it to trust Spirit completely?”
The reply was always the same… “You just step out there and do it”
I wrestled with this answer for years. It just didn’t seem to be enough… until I phoned in on a radio show hosted by a well-known medical intuitive and spiritual director.
After I asked her a couple of questions that baffled me about my work as an intuitive, and she gave me the same answer I always got. “Just step out into the realm of being a professional” she said.
Then, she fell silent before saying the thing that ignited my path like nothing before or since.
“Ah... Your real problem is that you don’t trust YOURSELF. You’ll never move forward until you can do that.”
It was a slap in the face. I was stunned. And she was totally right.
I trusted the higher perspective of Spirit, but I didn't always trust my own human ability to make a difference.
After I ruminated on that for a while, I finally got on with it and made the decision to become a professional intuitive. I chose to trust myself. It really was as simple as that.
It was then that I realized all of the repetitive advice I’d received was perfect, each time.
It was as if my Spirit Guides had spoken through each teacher, over and over, until I became a willing party in the creation of a spirit-led life.
At some point in the path Spirit has connected me and you in the same way, whether it be through my writing, a private reading, a class or a conversation. It’s as if intuitive connections are like the natural version of the internet and we’re all constantly sending and receiving spirit messages through each other.
So. Very. Cool.
But really, what does this story really have to do with you beyond all of that?
Well, I’ve found some extra detail hidden in the answers I received when I asked my teachers “how do I trust myself?”, and I want to share them with you in the hopes that you can bypass those years of distrust in yourself and get on with the beauty of living an intuitive life much faster than I did.
What I found is this:
After years of accuracy with clients and the same amount of time experimenting with trusting my intuition in my personal life, I discovered that there are 3 very natural (and equally strong) human aspects that can and will eclipse our intuition if we don’t keep them in balance.
It’s not always as simple as trusting / not trusting your inner guidance when your mind, body and spirit are all “guiding” you at the same exact time, but for different reasons.
As you experiment with trusting your intuition and the messages you receive from Spirit, keep them in mind and see if it doesn’t help the process along...
1. SURVIVAL INSTINCT: As members of the animal kingdom, we come equipped with a survival instinct that is designed to keep our physical identity alive. It’s the most primal part of our consciousness, and it speaks to us through the language of fear. Because there are rarely ferocious animals to flee from anymore (like the saber-tooth tigers of old), it often seeks out (and creates) mortal threat where there is none, so it can still be useful. The unknown then becomes the scariest and most uncomfortable thing this part of us can imagine. When the intuition, or voice of the spirit, asks us to step into the unknown with faith it can sometimes terrify that old instinct of ours. However, if we let fear win over our intuition too often, we'll most likely continue to live in old patterns that no longer resonate with our spirit. When we live in fear, we live in limitation because that’s the only thing that makes our instinctual self feel safe. Check now to see if you’ve felt stuck or limited lately. How might you be making choices through fear now, instead of taking some intuitive leaps into the unknown?
2. INTELLECTUAL MIND: As highly evolved members of the animal kingdom, we also come equipped with a finely tuned intellect designed to discover and categorize reality. It speaks the language of thought and puts parameters around the things we know and understand while it rejects or investigates anything we don’t. In doing so, it makes our intellectual identity feel safe and un-threatened. In the last several centuries, we’ve been highly focused on developing our intellectual acuity. “We think, therefore we are”, right? The understanding we collectively have of math, science, philosophy, communication, medicine and technology all come from the amazing thought machine that intellect is. And while it’s important, it has quietly overshadowed the still, small voice within that guides our internal world. It’s also the part of us that questions anything remotely spiritual, and yanks back the reigns the moment our intuition calls us into uncharted territories. However, just like our survival instinct, our intellect isn’t going anywhere (and I for one wouldn’t want it to). There is good news for the over-thinkers out there though. When we choose to use our intellect to support our intuition instead of our fears, we start to create a reliable communication system between our minds, bodies and spirits. Even though the intellect has historically been the thing that pushed intuition into the collective shadows, it will also be the aspect that brings it back into the light. Is there any area of life in which you’ve been overthinking lately? Does it feel like it’s questioning your intuition, trying to justify a limitation of the instinct or “figure it all out” before you make a move in a new direction?
3. LACK OF ACTION: Once you’ve looked your fears square in the eye and danced around with your thoughts about what “is”, the other big thing that will hinder your intuition is lack of taking physical action or shifting your mindset in favor of the intuitive messages you receive from within. I don’t know about you, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve received guidance from my intuition and either shrugged it off or just plain ignored it. And every time I did that, I was sorry. Intuition is like your inner GPS, designed to guide your way to your highest and best outcomes, even if it only shows you one turn at a time. When you pick a route based on fear and intellectually known parameters instead, you end up going in circles. What steps could you take right now to get your mind and body in alignment with the voice of your spirit? If nothing comes to you, know that the intention to receive guidance is enough. Your spirit is always ready to help… all you have to do is ask!
The other good news is that intuition, which is the language spoken by the essential “you”... doesn’t give up, no matter how many thoughts and fears you wrestle with in your life.
It only quietly waits for you to slow down, get still, and listen.
Fear wants to keep you safe
Mind wants to understand (and be “right”)
Spirit wants to keep you balanced and thriving in your life.
It wants to rejoice in living through your life.
Are your fears and thoughts keeping it from doing so?
There is something you can do to empower the intuitive wisdom that’s inside you right at this very minute.
Consciously commit to the path of clarity and wisdom by listening gently to the wisdom of your spirit.
Decide, right now, that it’s more important that you live in alignment with your spirit and feel balanced in your own life than to struggle with the drama that’s created when intuition is ignored.
