Are you Healing, Balancing or Evolving?
Transformations come in all shapes and sizes. And even though we usually talk more about the dramatic ones, living a life of Empowered Wisdom is actually more about navigating the microcosm of each moment.
Developing your intuition as a daily practice can fortify your awareness in a way that brings value to the dips, valleys and dark nights of the soul while also minimizing their frequency.
Read on for tips on how to intuitively navigate 3 major types of change…
As the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said, “change is the only constant in life.”
This is true spiritually as much as it is physically.
Sometimes change comes in the form of relief or exhilaration. A fresh wind blows in and sets us on a new course effortlessly. This kind of change is fun. We like it so much, we crave more.
However, in between the mundane moments and the extraordinary ones, there are a lot of little shifts that can challenge our mental balance while pushing our instinctual need for safety.
Ironically, these types of changes are the ones that form and re-form our life in ways that leave us feeling regretful or happy to have lived the way that we did.
For the best example of a change that feels restrictive despite being miraculous, I must once again look to our friend, the butterfly, and how she faces the challenges in her life…
When a caterpillar has reached the end of her earth-bound phase, she surrenders to the cocoon phase.
From within this limited space, she melts into a gooey formlessness.
Her inner life force is reprogramming her, creating her in a new image so that she can live from a whole new perspective.
And although she is effectively being “forced” into a confined space, without options, this most restrictive and confusing part of her life will be the most instrumental in setting her free.
She doesn’t fight the process and she doesn’t blame anyone for taking her freedom in the meantime because… well, being a butterfly, something within her knows she wouldn’t have it any other way.
Nature follows rhythms according to what keeps the system in balance. It evolves, moment by moment, to stay in harmony with itself.
Within our human bodies, the same essence drives our experience here on earth.
Our spirits ebb and flow with the tides of life. They respond to reality and speak to our conscious mind through the state of our emotional, mental and physical well-being.
In other words, how good or bad we feel within our own skin.
While it’s genetic programing that guides the caterpillar into her transformation, it’s our spiritual intuition that guides us by tapping us on the shoulder with a message, sensation or emotion when something in our lives calls for transformation.
If we can’t shift our frame of mind about it or neglect to take action on it, it settles in and speaks through energetic imbalance.
At this point in a human being’s life, we either check out and stay unconscious to the well-being that’s possible, fight the change or surrender to the cocoon that will heal and renew us into something greater than we ever imagined ourselves to be.
We are often taught that free will and action are things that create positive change, which is certainly true. But without being able to consciously surrender to the divine life-force within us, we’re in danger of creating from a place of imbalance (instead of wisdom), thereby creating more of the same.
Likewise, when we only surrender but never take action on the wisdom we receive, energy tends to fester and make us feel crazy as change churns abundantly within while little or nothing changes on the outside.
Evidence of this imbalance can be seen in the action-focused person who’s successful on the physical plane and yet feels emotionally empty and confused within… or the internally-focused person who experiences ultimate bliss when meditating and yet struggles to feel satisfied with the physical aspects of life.
Considering that you are an intricate being, made up of physical, mental AND spiritual stuff…. What kind of change are you experiencing at this time and what is the next best action step for you?
Are you Healing? – This type of change requires us to surrender to the ultimate cocoon-phase, arguments be damned.
I know whenever my body or emotions don’t feel well (or my mind feels frazzled), I must slow down and allow my energy to gather within. If I put my energy towards anything else, it's only to gather remedies and tools to support my healing. Putting myself “out there” too much in times like this can create more dis-ease, so I take illness and negative emotion as a message of wisdom from within myself to slow down and come back to center.
Still have stuff you need to take care of? Shift the balance from giving 100% to the outer world and focus a majority of that energy inward. I promise, your world won’t fall apart if you take care of yourself first. It should actually improve as a result!
Are you Balancing? - This type of change is somewhere between healing and growing…it’s the time of reformation that happens inside the cocoon.
Perhaps you have recently experienced a major change or healing crisis and you’re on your way back “up”. You’re feeling stronger but not yet rooted in your new phase. Now's the time to start exerting some of that “free will”. What does your spirit wish to create in the time to come? Your Source has offered you healing and now it wants to know how to guide you forward. It’s kind of like programming your inner GPS to a new location. I personally experience this after something I’ve co-created with my inner wisdom comes to fruition.
Once you’ve celebrated how far you’ve come with gratitude, Consciously dream and choose how you wish to feel in the time before you. Creating a vision board is a great thing to do at this time (but remember to focus on the way you want to experience new things, not just the things themselves.)
Are you Evolving (or growing)? - This type of change is the one we talk about most, as it’s transformation at its most obvious… its that moment when the butterfly emerges from her cocoon and realizes she has wings.
And even though this is the most exciting type of change, it’s important to acknowledge it can still be challenging. For instance, when I find myself in a new phase of life in which old energies and patterns I held dear don’t work anymore, I’m tempted to limit my growth and stay the same so that I can bring my comfort zone with me into the great beyond.
The thing is, the butterfly phase requires a full release of old patterns so that new ones can be practiced. The caterpillar must die for the butterfly to be born. When we do our part in the healing and balancing phases, this is much easier to accept. By staying present to the possibilities of the future, the limitations of the past simply fall away.
All of that being said, while we as humans have no power to re-direct the web of life independently of all the other forces in the universe... we can still hone our connection to a higher perspective in a way that honors our innate formlessness, our search for balance and our desire to fly in each and every moment.
Pay attention now to the changes happening within you…
-Release the old hurt that you still carry. It’s keeping you from hearing your wisdom. Feel it. Cry or scream if you need to. Write a letter and burn it, releasing your anger and sadness into the fire.
-Invest time and energy into your own healing and self-development. Don’t ignore what needs to be done or said, lest it get worse and hijack your whole life.
-Allow yourself to dream impossible dreams. Your spirit wants what it wants. Don’t lose yourself in those dreams, but also beware of taking too much action on them without consulting your intuition first.
-Face your fears about what comes next and take steps upon the more conscious path. As I often say, these are the moments we break free of karmic patterns. By acknowledging and releasing what stifles us instead of feeds growth and expansion, we move into true presence.
All of these things may require a shift in mindset, actions, conversations, spiritual practice and any combination of the above. And I know, first hand, that it’s not always easy. But it’s always necessary when we want to live in harmony with the wisdom of our spirit.
Along with a commitment to finding clarity over a commitment to battling suffering, your wisdom will always help you find your way.
Til next time...
Peace, Love and Wisdom Always
