Follow The Flow
When we think of the word consciousness, many levels of meanings may come to mind. It operates through concepts as simple as remembering our name, to those as complex as the theories and inventions born of math and science. It inspires the writings and artistic works of the world and contributes to every act of cruelty or kindness. On more automatic levels, it pumps blood and digests food, keeping our bodies running and deciding when it is time for them to stop. We know reality through the things we are conscious of and the feelings they stir within us. Our human consciousness is the Lover within us as much as it is the Hater; both Question Asker and Perceiver.
I enjoy contemplating the idea that just as consciousness flows through our human mechanism, it flows through “All-That Is”, like some great animator, whispering spring plants into bloom and whipping summer storms into their annual routes. This vast intelligence transforms green trees into the warmth of autumn before gently blanketing them in the repose of winter. Meanwhile, it churns the earth’s core, keeps it in orbit and filters energy through countless stars all in a day’s work. Unlike our own conscious thoughts, this aspect of consciousness is focused on one thing only: how to go with its own flow. Unhindered by doubts and judgments of a curious mind interested in controlling its experience, it does not become addicted to its own beauty any more than it becomes hindered by the stress and destruction it is capable of. It knows nothing of judgment, but everything about bringing imbalance back into balance.
When I hit a snag in life, it always helps me to remember that consciousness is one great river made of many different streams. I can focus on my own projections, fears or attachments as much as I wish, but if I am feeling badly with regards to these things, I have the ability to choose to switch my focus to a more universal stream that flows with the wisdom of eons. With firm intention to harmonize my thoughts with “what-is”, it is not long before I find meaning that helps me to appreciate the lows as much as the highs. With a trust and understanding that our conscious thoughts can go with the great flow of life, we can see more clearly that everything in our experience is an aspect of nature, acting in cooperation to balance and evolve us into new levels of being. The earth still turns despite our illusions and our souls still grow regardless of our mental meddling – why not listen to the small voice within that knows this? Why not let it be that easy? ...
