As I write this, I’m taking inventory of can goods and water supply. I’m making plans and creating contingencies for all the possible scenarios to come this week. I’m checking the national hurricane center’s website carefully to get the straight facts about the next few days. Irma is coming and no matter where she wobbles, we’re going to have an interesting time here in Florida.
Being a native, I’ve been through my share of hurricanes. Some, I obliviously slept through. Others, I shook through in a panic as tornadoes took down the neighborhood. Regardless, no matter how I responded to the storms, the storms were what they were. I was the one who added the emotional component depending on how much faith I was willing to have that I could handle what was to come and how much I could trust my own intuition to alert me to what was most important in any given moment.
Thing is… I can say the same thing for the physical, emotional and mental storms I have seen. There’s a perilous quality to anything that threatens the status quo. Whether we are afraid of losing our comfort, our homes, our health, those we love or even our very lives… fear is the thing that causes the most damage internally when we are faced with the trials of being a human on this earth. Our primal mind takes over when threatened, keeping us kicking and screaming through situations that are already inherently stressful enough. It could be grief, heartbreak, stress, or a great big monster of a storm. Anything that threatens life as we know it has the potential to sweep us away and drain our power as beings of light in this crazy world. But did you know that, if you want to, you can improve your experience of reality with just
ONE CHOICE in the midst of what is happening in physical reality?
Here’s my 3 step method of intuitive self-inquiry that helps me find the center of my still, small inner voice whenever my worry or thoughts scatter debris through my energy. Take a few deep breaths, place your hand over your heart and close your eyes while you ponder each question and confront a few key parts of yourself directly.
STEP 1: Notice the energy of FEAR and how it rises up in you.
Do you panic and shut down into a sense of powerlessness and despair?
Do you become competitive and hoard, needing to come out on top at all costs?
Do you suffer from worst case scenario syndrome, allowing awful visions to haunt your present moment?
Once your know how FEAR primarily communicates itself to your conscious mind and behavior, honor the fear and say to it, “Thank you for wanting to keep me safe and comfortable, but you’re leaving me powerless. Maybe there’s a better way?”
STEP 2: Notice the energy of NEGATIVE OR LIMITING THOUGHT and how it rises up in you.
Do you want to know exactly how everything’s going to play out before you can be at peace?
Do you judge or compare yourself to other people’s way of handling crisis and fears?
Do you make decisions and then question or overthink them to the point of craziness?
Once your know how NEGATIVE OR LIMITING THOUGHT primarily communicates itself to your conscious mind and behavior, honor the NEGATIVE OR LIMITING THOUGHT and say, “Thank you for wanting to help me understand this situation and stay on top of things, but you’re stressing me out. Maybe there’s a better way?
STEP 3: Notice how the voice of your SPIRIT (aka: your INTUITION) rises up in you.
When you ask your spirit and higher guidance to give you messages, do you receive visions?
Do you hear phrases or sense the answer in natural elements like the wind or totem animals?
Do you just feel like you KNOW the answer, deep in your core?
Once your know how your INTUITION primarily communicates itself to your conscious mind and behavior, honor the INTUITION and say, “What do I need to know right now for the highest and best benefit of myself and all concerned in this situation?”
Get very still and very present to the answer that comes to you.
Once you hear it, CHOOSE to trust it. Let it EMPOWER your clarity and peace of mind and TAKE ACTION on it as needed. Allow it to paint an improved reality for you in the midst of adversity.
If you’re doing ok with all this fear and overthinking stuff and just want to know how to be of help in such situations, follow the same steps to maintain your place as the calm in the eye of the storm. When emotions run high and others are not as open to the possibility of inner peace despite all obstacles, you may find great purpose in being the steadfast structure under which they can find refuge. No matter what storms we face, when we face them together instead of in competition we have a chance at not only surviving, but THRIVING because of what we can learn as spiritual beings living these human lives.
Whether you are in Irma’s path, facing wildfires, concerned about family and friends affected by Mexico’s earthquake, or dealing with any other scary situation right now… hold on to your inner knowing that you will do your highest and best no matter what comes. Your intuition is a valuable life tool that can help, and challenge is a great teacher to those who wish to walk through life enriched by its mysteries.
I’ll be holding the light of great possibility even if Irma tries to put it out this weekend.
Won’t you join me?
All things change according to the light shed upon them.
