As you probably know by now, one of my favorite things to explore and share is the concept of letting Spirit guide our steps in life. Even though I have given this a lot of thought and practice over my lifetime, I understand that it can come off as an abstract idea without some straight talk about why it’s so beneficial. Who is this “Spirit” of which I speak and why does it know better than “us”, anyhow? Today I want to dive into this subject in a little more detail, to inspire you to trust your connection to this mystery and to explore the concept of living by the intuitive wisdom through which it speaks in a practical way.
Since the birth of the new age and personal development movements in the 1960’s and 1970’s (and perhaps long before that), there’s been a lot of talk about the concept of creating our own life experience by working with universal laws. The most well-known of these laws is the “Law of Attraction”, which states that matching vibrations are attracted to each other, and therefore we attract more of what we believe, feel and/or think about into our experience. While I always knew there was something to this, as a spiritual intuitive I didn’t quite understand how it worked with the concept of intuition. If we are intuitively guided to do and create certain things, are these things orchestrated by a higher power or are they chosen by us? If there is a higher power guiding our steps, who is really doing the creating? The more I explored and played with this idea in my own life, the more I realized that the answer to my questions is “It depends…”
When we are unaware of our connection to the Divine (or “the something that is greater than ourselves”), our dreams and wishes are often fleeting. This is the point in which we wish for bigger, better and more material things to enhance our experience. We’ll think, ” Maybe more money will make me happy, or the fancier car… maybe vengeance against the ones who hurt me will do it… or perhaps the better job and the perfect partner are the only ways I will ever love my life… maybe if I am perfect at doing (fill-in-the-blank) I will finally be complete!” Many people create these exact things and still feel empty inside, doomed to a sense of unhappiness no matter how many of these dreams materialize. In this scenario, something always remains missing.
Conversely, when we are aware of our innate connection to the Divine spark within us, our dreams and wishes are more organic and flourishing than simple objects of desire. They can include material well-being as a side effect, but they are based on how we want to feel and the type of world we want to experience, instead of specific personal wishes. On an even greater scale, they can include how we would like to use our gifts and lives in service to the well-being of humanity itself. Our inner Spirit is well-aware of its connection to all-that-is, and when we really get centered in that knowing, smaller desires and concerns fall away as material needs are also met more easily. In other words, knowing what your Spirit wants is often the path to “having it all” in a more sustainable way than manifesting a sense of well-being based on material things alone. In this scenario, we are always present and life experience becomes an amplifier of our joy instead of a mistaken source of it.
Long story short, our intuition is essentially the spiritual GPS system that leads us towards what we prefer at any given moment. Life is about discovering these preferences and learning the process, which can be why bad things happen in life but do not intrinsically hold the power to define the future. We can consciously tell our inner GPS where we want to go, but if we allow our disconnected self to do the choosing we will probably need to “recalculate the route” often, which will inevitably lead to the feeling that we are wandering in circles and never getting to where we really wanted to go in the first place. On the other hand, once we become connected to the Divine source that dwells within us as our “spiritual self”, our “essential nature”, or our “soul”, our intuition will calculate a route that includes our preferred thoughts and feelings on a regular basis as we travel between destinations that highlight our Spirit’s purpose for being here.
If our spirit wants security above all things, our intuition will caution us against risk. If our spirit wants to expand it will call us into creative action. If we want healing, it will guide us to healing choices. If we want loving relationships, it will guide us to be compassionate. If we want to experience a kinder world, it will guide us to be the presence of kindness…and so on. When we ignore the guidance in any of our pursuits, that’s when we really get off the map into our own small-self agenda. Without trust in our inner knowing we can get lost in a world of concepts and illusions that have no power to fulfill us. This can take us through many variations of suffering, but not much farther than that.
I have noticed that any confusion around what our intuition is and how it can help us get what we want comes only from our desire to control the process. It’s a hard habit to break for logical minds based in a material world. The key is to get quiet and really listen to your inner self (your Spirit). What is it asking to experience today? How does it want to feel in your life? The answer is probably simple and accessible in any moment. Try programming that inner GPS with this deepest wish and then follow the intuitive steps it gives you. Once you get there, THEN think of some material goals that would be fun to experience, but not necessarily because they would bring you happiness. When we create from this way of listening we can truly be surprised at the ways in which the life of our dreams comes into existence. A life in which Spirit is present in each moment is a life that is a joy to live. Because regardless of triumphs and hardships, Spirit can see the value in each moment and guide us unerringly to our highest and best lives with respect to our own unique path.
