A few weeks ago I was feeling caught up in busy-ness, and although I love my work, it had been too long since I took a whole day off to relax in nature.
I considered this a red flag for my personal well-being, as I've discovered that while I don't need much to access joy and happiness in life, time in nature is at the top of that short list. Without it, I can start to feel overwhelmed by technology and traffic and all of the other very human things most of us deal with each day.
To answer the call into the wild, my love and I decided that we would take a day off mid-week and head to the beach. And although I still thought about my to-do list that morning, I set it all aside and packed up for a day of fun and sun.
When we arrived, we set up the umbrella and immediately reclined to enjoy the wind and the waves. Once I finally sat up again I felt like I had taken a sedative. The sound of the ocean had relaxed me so deeply that I had not a care in the world. The soft sand at my back had grounded me so fully that all the energy left my mind and melted into the earth.
This was just what the (spirit) doctor ordered, and if I had not listened I would not have those recent moments to cherish…napping in the sun, floating in the waves and walking the coast at sunset, hand-in-hand with my loving partner (who I had asked for years ago on that very same beach, by the way). Not to mention, once I got back into the swing of things I was more relaxed, clear headed and more attuned to my intuition.
Taking this day to relax and enjoy simple pleasures reminded me of a quote from the legendary eighties movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off...
"Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it."
When this line was uttered, Ferris the naughty teenager could have been a wise old Buddha as far as I’m concerned. Our presence is EVERYTHING. Noticing moments is EVERYTHING. Because the past is gone and we are creating our future with the way we are present in the current moment. When our own presence escapes us, whether it be due to negative emotion or too many visions packed into too little time, it is important to restore our conscious awareness in any way possible.
Time in nature is one of my favorite ways to get there.
And what about you?
What is your pathway to presence?
Do you like to read or write uplifting words? Maybe your kids or grand-kids, or even pets, bring that sparkle back into your eye. Perhaps creative projects, deep conversations and laughter do it. Then again, maybe spiritual practice is your favorite medicine…
Whatever it is, it is good to honor it as a vital part of your well-being. If you have an “emergency procedure” to help re-align you to your spirit when you start to feel a little funky, you will have an easier time staying connected to it in the long run. Don't forget to explore all the things that help you find your center. Take action on them and connect more deeply with your spirit every chance you get!

For now, go ahead and declare your own holiday!
Request that day off work if you have to, and put it on your calendar. As I always say, if you don’t speak up for your spirit, who will? I doubt we’ll get a spiritual re-centering day put on the national holiday list any time soon, so why not create one for yourself?
Better yet, comment below and tell me you did it so I can cheer you on!
(If you read my post about my younger days as a nap-time revolutionary (posted here), you know I am an advocate for a certain amount of healthy rebellion).
Remember to take care of your Spirit and it will take care of you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon!
In Peace, Wisdom and (Self)Love,
