I’ve been learning about butterflies lately.
This year I’ll be planting a garden for them, and I want to get it right.
Did you know that having a butterfly garden can change the world by creating a positive ripple effect in the ecosystem? As of this writing, butterflies are declining in numbers due to humans’ attempts to control the earth in unnatural ways. Because of this, other species that depend on their existence are falling out of balance too.
It makes sense, really. The web of life is so intricately connected.
There’s even a theory that explores the idea that a tiny butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world can create a hurricane somewhere else. It’s called “The Butterfly Effect”. That’s a lot of power for such a delicate creature!
But I digress…
Just like any transformed being, a butterfly’s life story provides endless fascination when examined closely enough.
Beginning as a tiny egg, a humble caterpillar hatches and begins exploring her world.
Something within drives her to take in as much of her physical environment as she can.
Utterly insatiable, she consumes and processes the world around her to fulfill the needs of her earth-bound self.
And yet it never seems to be enough.
As life progresses, she starts to feel heavy and slow. Her energy weakens and there’s no room left for outside energies within her. What was once nourishing becomes overwhelming and toxic.
Her commitment to an old way of being must change, for her life now depends on it.
I, for one, know this place well.
How about you?
When old ways of being are no longer helping us grow and start to weigh us down instead, we have one of three options:
1. Ignore it, and allow the toxicity to build and overwhelm us.
2. Fight it, and suffer the blows that come from the forces of nature that are moving us forward.
3. Accept it, turn within and form a sacred space from which we safely transform into the next best version of ourselves.
I can tell you first hand that if you're wishing to deepen your connection to inner peace and spiritual self-development in 2018, Option 3 is the only way to go.
There are many that would prefer to stay focused on the dramas of life, for there are fascinating battles to be fought and epic stories to be told in that space (even if they come at a great cost).
But for you, who reads notes like this one… I invite you to take a look at the ways of life you are currently committed to see if you’re in alignment with the flow of your ever-expanding spirit.
Where would you like more peace, joy or love to flow?
Perhaps you are uneasy with one or more of your relationships...
Or your body is not as healthy as you’d like it to be...
Maybe your job is sucking a little more of your soul each day...
In the worst case, you may even feel completely abandoned by your higher power.
In all of these scenarios, you are most likely committed to something that absolutely negates the possibility of improvement in that area of life. Don’t feel bad about it, we all get stuck sometimes.
Check in again now, and ask yourself:
Are you committed to your comfort zones with people, even when it hurts?
Does that yummy food or bad habit always seem to eclipse your intentions to heal?
Maybe it’s the paycheck and benefits that keep you feeling stagnant (even if it’s not even really enough to pay the bills)…
Then again, you may be unconsciously committed to your battle with what-is, so much so that you’ve forgotten that there is a divine intelligence that ALWAYS has your back.
You don’t have to do this alone. And you always have options.
At this point in the butterfly’s story, the caterpillar begins to spin a special silk around herself.
It’s gentle and soft, but will harden into a chrysalis to keep her safe as she begins to transform. From within this space, her cells will re-imagine her way of being (They are literally called “imaginal” cells – isn’t that cool?!).
Shielded from the harshness of the elements, she will melt into formlessness. And within her chrysalis, she is soon to be reborn as something amazing, yet unrecognizable to herself.
Stay tuned for the rest of the butterfly’s story, for this month’s posts are all about commitment and why it is so important when we are called to transform into higher and better versions of ourselves.
Is transformation calling you now?
If so, what happens next in YOUR story?
